
Marcos di Silva is a brazilian composer, electric bass player and music teacher. He is a PhD candidate in Music composition advised by Dr. Pedro Kröger. He has a Composition masters from the Music Graduate Program of the Federal University of Bahia (2007-2008), and a bachelor degree from the same institution. He is the Genos research group laboratory coordinator and Genos member since 2005. His interests include Contour theories in Musical Composition, Computer Music and Open Source, and he has given classes about Linux and Lilypond. He is also member of Rameau development team. Rameau is an automated harmonic analysis system.
He was born in Bahia, Brazil, in 1977 and began playing acoustic guitar at the age of 16, but one year later decided to play electric bass. He has attended to masterclasses with bass players as Nico Assumpção and Itiberê Zwarg (Hermeto Pascoal). In 2001 he began a new stage in his music studies when he entered in university. He studied composition, orquestration, tonal harmony, counterpoint, fugue and analysis with Agnaldo Ribeiro, Flávio de Queiroz, Fernando Burgos, Ricardo Bordini, Wellington Gomes, Paulo Costa Lima, Jamary Oliveira and Pedro Kröger. He participated in Ângela Lühning (ethnomusicology) and Lucas Robatto (musicology) research groups. He also has attended to composition classes with Gabriela Frank, Derek Bermel, Bruce Trinkley, and Felipe Lara.
In 2001 he created, together to Flávio de Queiroz, the group A Trama do Macaco Prego and could play his own compositions. Marcos writes orchestral and chamber arrangements and compositions. He had his music performed by ensembles like the Federal University of Bahia Symphony Orchestra, Duo Robatto, Duo Sacramento, among others. In 2007 he participated in XVII Brazilian Contemporary Music Bienal, and in 2008 he participated in VI Encun.
